We need a helping hand!

19 Mar 2026

Hi everyone,

thanks for your support. On Wednesday, 25th March, Sunderland City Council will debate a motion which could help to pause demolition and save the National Glass Centre.
If you still feel strongly about this, please could you write to your local councillors and MP to express your concerns. This will help the campaign enormously. If you live in Sunderland, consider attending the council meeting in person (4pm at City Hall, Sunderland) to show the strength of public feeling.

Thank you.

Broken

Poem written by professional writer Anne Loadman.

The glass, goblet, rolled across the dining table,

spilling its ruby liquid,

and smashing,

percussive and shrill,

as it landed

on the wooden boards below.

Broken,

useless now,

it lay,

motionless.

Yet, in the glow of the hearth,

the shattered shards

refracted the light,

echoing the sunset colours of fire flame.

Smaller pieces twinkled

against the blackened boards

like pin prick stars in a midnight sky.

In death, it held such beauty.

It’s demise, a metaphor

for the fragility of life.
